Rio Rancho orders boil water alert

The City of Rio Rancho has ordered a precautionary boil water advisory for all water users who lost service as a result of the water main break near Unser Blvd. and Northern.

While water service was restored Thursday afternoon around 2 p.m., the city is asking that people boil any tap water that is to be consumed for 24 hours following the restoration.

About 400 customers lost service after the water main break.

The city said that while all safety procedures have been taken by crews while repairing the water main break and restoring water service, the precautionary advisory has been issued until bacteriological tests confirm that the water is safe to drink.

NM elementary school honors Sandy Hook shooting victim

One of the 20 children killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut was honored today in Rio Rancho.

The six-year-old and her family lived in New Mexico before moving to Connecticut in 2012.

Her parents, Robbie and Alyssa Parker, are back in New Mexico for the first time since losing their daughter in December.

The Parkers say they are taking it one day at a time. But they wanted to be part of the ceremony at Maggie Cordova Elementary School in order to say thanks to everyone for their support.

Students at Maggie Cordova decorated the school in honor of the girl with an angelic face.

Emilie Parker was a “fancy girl” and gifted artist who loved daisies and roses.

Her former school is dedicating a whole garden in her memory.

Alyssa and Robbie Parker say their return is bittersweet. “It's pretty emotional to be back,” said Robbie Parker.

Rio Rancho new home construction on the rise

New home construction remains flat in the Albuquerque area – with one area of prosperity and promise: Rio Rancho.

In some areas of the “City of Vision” power saws and framing hammers and boomboxes pumping out music can be heard – they're the sounds of progress.

Rio Rancho has issued 134 building permits in the first quarter of the year, a 63 percent increase over last year at this time. They’re building, and people are buying.

“We do have a new home,” smiles Renee Smith, who recently moved into a new Pulte home in the Loma Colorado development. “We love Loma Colorado, mainly for families and all the parks and it’s just a beautiful place to live!”

Home construction means good jobs that pay well, the kind that evaporated by the thousands in the recession.
